Straw burning might be cause of heavy smog following Golden Week
Although Beijing residents don’t believe straw burning caused the recent heavy smog in the city, the Henan Province environmental watchdog claims otherwise.
The smog started rolling in from the Henan Province on Tuesday and smog alerts ranged from yellow to severe orange.
In Beijing, visibility was reduced to less than one kilometre.
The Henan provincial environmental protection bureau said pollution discharged from the almost 8000 straw burning sites has accumulated in the air over the past week.
Farmers traditionally burn straw after the autumn harvest and bury the ashes as they believe it fertilizes farmland.
